The Defiant Ones


“The Defiant Ones” tells of the unbreakable bond of trust and friendship between music legends Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, two street smart men from different worlds who together defied traditional wisdom and transformed contemporary culture in the process. To commemorate the debut of the documentary series, HBO took over Brooklyn Steel, a 1,800-capacity venue located in the heart of East Williamsburg, for an epic celebration.

Our approach was to create a fully-immersive experience for the audience. The space was filled with a mix of show-relevant decor, installations, and customizable gifts for guests and fans. The event itself featured performances by 2Chainz, Jillionaire (Major Lazer), Lizzo, and Vince Staples.

With very little assets given by client, we decided to build upon the idea of defiance itself by creating custom glitch typography using Unity 3D. From there, we applied this to custom signage, digital assets, stage visuals, merchandise and a “Sonic Wallpaper” presented by Beats by Dre.
